Burg Bilstein is a spur castle on a spur of the adjacent Rosenberg. This falls away steeply on three sides, so that the castle's defenses had to be aligned solely to the mountain in a north-easterly direction.
The castle's appearance is therefore dominated by the two round towers: the Chapel Tower and the Hohnekamp Tower. The towers are connected by a tunnel running under the castle courtyard. The wing to the south-east, on the other hand, was built in 1978 to extend the youth hostel. In front of the central building, on the valley side, there is a sunken area on which a lime tree grows, visible from afar. Today, a brick bridge connects the main castle and the outer castle via the partially filled-in, 15 m wide moat.
