Burg Holtzbrinck

Alongside Burg Altena, Burg Holtzbrinck is the only representative secular building of art-historical significance and is also the oldest town house in the town. It was first mentioned in a document in 1643, when it was acquired by Georg Holtzbrinck, the lord of the manor. However, it seems certain that the oldest part of the house dates back to the 16th century.
Stephan Johann, Georg Holtzbrinck's son, made significant changes to the building. This gave the house roughly its present form in the years 1673-1689, and the "old staircase" was also built at this time. The garage added in 1937 now houses the kitchen, checkroom and toilets.
The house was given the name "Burg" Holtzbrinck because of its castle-like layout.
The town of Altena bought the entire site in 1972. After several years of work, the building was restored and handed over for its new purpose in 1976: The castle became the "Bürgerburg", a meeting place available to any visitor for resting, reading and attending events. In 1980/81, the underground parking garage was built and the rococo-style garden above was laid out.

The meeting place offers space for approx. 60 people including a bar and coffee kitchen.
The Blue Room (wedding room) offers space for approx. 10 people.
The Fireplace Room on the 1st floor seats approx. 25 people and the Georg-von-Holtzbrinck Hall on the 1st floor seats approx. 130 people.
There are stage elements and a Bechstein grand piano in Burg Holtzbrinck.
