Flechtdorf is particularly well known for its church, which belonged to the Flechtdorf Monasterywhich was dissolved in 1598.
The monastery church of St. Maria was probably built from 1130. It is particularly notable for its two massive towers.
Double towers are rather unusual in the Waldeck region. The church was built in several stages. First as a Romanesque basilica, in the 13th century more in a transitional style, recognizable by the southern aisle. In the middle of the 17th century, the monastery church of St. Maria was given a new look when it was rebuilt after a fire. Among other things, it was given the end wall instead of the choir, the uniform gabled roof and an original east tower was demolished.
Among the more interesting details inside the now Protestant monastery church in Flechtdorf are a bas-relief depicting a dragon on the southern wall of the transept and the 16th century baptismal font. The choir stalls come from the former monastery in Volkhardinghausen near Bad Arolsen, which was demolished in the 17th century.
After the dissolution of the Flechtdorf monastery, the Counts of Waldeck initially used the grounds as an agricultural domain. From the beginning of the 18th century, a hospital moved into the monastery buildings.
Numerous concerts and music events, workshops and Christmas markets, open-air cinema and "Open Monument Days" have since been used by many visitors to view the extended parts of the monastery and take part in the events.
Guided tours of the monastery take place every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from April to October.every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from April - October 14:30 - 17:00
