The Genkeltalsperre is a "border dam" and is partly located in Meinerzhagen and Gummersbach. It is mainly fed by the Genkel and Grotmicke tributaries. Two well-surfaced circular hiking trails (10 and 14 km) offer opportunities for cycling, jogging and hiking. In addition, a well-signposted nature trail was created around the Genkeltalsperre in 2003.

Further information:

The Genkeltalsperre is a drinking water reservoir. Entering the shore area is prohibited!

The Genkel and Grotmicke tributaries fill the dam and thus ensure the drinking water supply for the surrounding area. The Genkeltalsperre is a pure drinking water reservoir, so water sports are not possible here.

Nevertheless, the 64-hectare lake with its 8.2 million liters of water is a popular excursion destination. There are two circular hiking trails to choose from around the lake, one 10 km long and one 14 km long. As is often the case at reservoirs, the paths are well developed and are suitable for walking as well as cycling.

The reservoir was created in 1953 and a water nature trail was set up to mark its 50th anniversary in 2003. Thirteen information boards provide all kinds of interesting facts about the dam and drinking water production.

The former knight's seat of Listringhausen is located directly on the forebay of the Genkeltalsperre. The estate was first mentioned in 1621. At that time, Friedrich von Neuhoff was the owner of Gut Listringhausen. Incidentally, von Neuhoff later also owned Badinghagen Castle, which is not far away. The estate remained in the family for five generations. It then changed hands several times and is still privately owned today. It can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The entire Gut Listringhausen consists of a number of buildings: the main house and outbuildings, a gatehouse, stables and a small park.
