The climbing area was set up by the German Alpine Club and IG Klettern in a former quarry in the town of Warstein. Various climbing routes are available on several rock faces, which are suitable for sport and alpine climbers as well as sporty families and beginners. The level of difficulty of the routes is between the 3rd and 9th degree and the Hillenberg is divided into the following wall areas: Wästerwand, Goldgräberwand, Hillenbergwand, Essener Wand and the Brauereifels. Information about the routes can be found in the brochure "Kletterarena Hillenberg", which can be downloaded at www.kletterarena.info.

On weekdays (Monday to Friday), climbing is only permitted from 12 noon due to blasting that may take place in the morning in the neighboring quarry.
