If you follow the M4 hiking trail from Meschede railroad station, you will reach Hünenburg Castle on a hilltop above the Ruhr.
These are the remains of a Carolingian rampart. They date from the time of Charlemagne's Saxon Wars.
The castle, which was surrounded by two ramparts and a moat, offered sweeping views over the Hennen and Ruhrtal valleys.
The outer bailey (outer ring) covered 2.8 ha, the inner ring - the main castle - was 0.8 ha in size. The castle probably dates back to the late 9th or early 10th century. Finds made during excavations indicate that the castle must have been inhabited for some time.
Today there is a barbecue area at Hünenburg Castle.
