The former Büecke military training area, now the Kleiberg pasture landscape, is a 230-hectare Natura 2000 site that has been a nature reserve since 2004. It lies like a green island in the middle of the fertile fields of the Haarstrang. Species worthy of protection here are the yellow-bellied toad, the red kite and the red-backed shrike. Their populations should increase again.
The two endangered species of the centaury and the thorny hair-grass can be found in the sparse open land.

The promotion of nature conservation and tourism are the primary objectives of the ERDF project, which is funded in equal parts by the European Union and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
To this end, ponds and pools were created, grazing areas for cattle and horses were established and three viewing hills and paths were built. The new "Alter Soestweg" cycle route now directly connects Soest and Möhnesee and provides wonderful views of the interesting cultural landscape. Three beautiful Schledden valleys become visible again through paths. Information boards along the hiking trails provide information about the nature, culture and history of the old training area.
Wide open areas in the middle and west are grazed all year round by a few semi-wild horses and cattle. This creates a mosaic of open areas interspersed with groups of bushes and copses. Other areas are kept open by sheep.
The Liz offers interesting excursions through the nature reserve and has developed GPS tours to experience nature on the Kleiberg.
