Meerhof was first mentioned in documents in 1170 as "Mere, mare, mari and Ostmare", and the name "Merhoff" first appeared in 1416. An ear of corn is depicted on the town's coat of arms as a symbol of the fertile Sintfeld, while the antler pole is a reminder of the large forest that borders the town.
On the themed hiking trail "Naturerlebnis Wald", the forest can be explored at over 20 stations by doing, seeing, hearing and touching.
Other local hiking trails, such as the "Sieben Buchen" area, invite you to explore the district. The natural monuments "Stelter Linde" and "Anneken Linde" in the village and the "Hückelbaum" just outside are beautiful photo spots.
The oldest building in the village is the former tithe barn.
