Between 1964 and 1969, a basin with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters was built on the Dahlberg near Rönkhausen and another with a capacity of 1.3 million cubic meters was built over 270 meters lower down in the Glinge valley. The machines in the underground power plant, which are pumps and turbines in one, use cheap night-time electricity to pump water into the upper basin and generate electricity at peak times.

The upper reservoir was extensively refurbished in 2018/2019. The 1.3 km long circular path around the upper reservoir was also renovated. An energy trail with visual connections, benches and mile markers has been created here. It also offers a 360-degree view of the beautiful landscape.

The path around the upper reservoir is accessible to the public and barrier-free at all times.
