The Märkische Museums-Eisenbahn keeps the memory of an important but long-gone era of transportation history alive. You can see and experience the typical features of a narrow-gauge railroad with true-to-original trains on the 1000 mm gauge. Narrow-gauge railroads made an important contribution as feeders and distributors to the main railroads. Due to the early beginnings of industrialization, there was a particular concentration of such railroads in the western Sauerland.

These include the Kreis Altenaer Eisenbahn (KAE), the Plettenberg Kleinbahn (PKB), the Hohenlimburger Kleinbahn (HKB), the Haspe-Voerde-Breckerfeld Kleinbahn (HVB), the Iserlohn Kreisbahn (IKB) and the Ruhr-Lippe-Kleinbahnen (RLK). What all these railroads had in common was the 1000 mm track gauge.
With the increasing motorization of road traffic, the railroads gradually lost their importance in the 1950s and 60s, so that by the mid-60s all the others except the HKB had been closed down and dismantled. When the Juist island railroad, to which various KAE and PKB vehicles had been transferred, was shut down in 1982, some railroad enthusiasts decided to erect a living monument to these narrow-gauge small railroads.
A suitable site was found on the route of the Plettenberg-Herscheid railroad line, which was closed in 1969, in the area of Hüinghausen station, which the association was able to acquire from the Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1984. An adjoining section of track around two and a half kilometers long was made available by the town of Plettenberg, which had become the owner in the meantime. Parallel to the restoration of the listed reception building and the reconstruction of the tracks, a comprehensive collection of vehicles was built up.
Travel days: Between May and October, the trains of the "Sauerland Little Railway" roll comfortably back and forth through the landscape of the Else Valley between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hamme. They give visitors the feeling of traveling in past decades. The Sauerländer Kleinbahn, pulled by a steam or historic diesel locomotive, was once an important means of transportation for industry and agriculture in the mountainous Sauerland region. ►To the timetable
Children: The lantern rides in November and the St. Nicholas rides in December are particularly popular - St. Martin and St. Nicholas are guests then.
Special trips: A special trip with steam or diesel can also be booked outside of the specified travel times. From a birthday party on rails to a company party or a wedding, anything is possible. ►More information
Museum café: The "Kleinbahncafé" is open on all operating days and the information store in the station offers an interesting selection of literature on local railroad history and other narrow-gauge railroads in Germany.
