The Wasserschloß Hovestadt was first mentioned in documents in 1292. Due to its strategically favorable location at the Lippe crossing, it was destroyed several times in the Middle Ages, but was always rebuilt.
The present moated castle with the main castle was built between 1563 and 1572 by Laurenz von Brachum. The outer bailey was built in 1733 by Johann Conrad Schlaun. The Renaissance castle has a castle chapel in the Baroque outbuilding and an 18th century Baroque garden, which was opened to the public in 1997 after restoration. The variety of building materials used for Schloss Hovestadt is striking.
The Counts of Plettenberg have owned the castle since 1710 and have lived in it since 1733, so it is unfortunately not possible to visit the interior.
