Tinder fungus was used to light fires. The raw material is beech sponge - also known as tree fungus - from our local forests. In 1816 there was one tinder factory (Schmidt mill), by 1824 there were already three factories producing 16,000 pounds of finished sponge a year. With the invention of the friction match in 1833, sponge production gradually lost its economic importance and finally disappeared completely at the end of the 19th century.
