The statue of the Mother of God came by mysterious routes from Cologne to the pilgrimage site of Wiedenest and then to Sendschotten during the religious confusion. Even today, the faithful of the Belmicke parish (to which Wiedenest belongs ecclesiastically) make an annual pilgrimage to Sendschotten.

The first chapel in Sendschotten was donated by Peter and Maria Rahrbach in 1684. Legend has it that the statue of the Virgin Mary came from Wiedenest, which had become Protestant; its former owners had tried to get it back, but inexplicable events prevented them from doing so.

Since 1705, this statue has been at the center of the "Sendschotter Umgang", a procession that travels from Sendschotten to many neighbouring villages. - Today's neo-Gothic chapel from 1871 was designed by the Paderborn diocesan architect Güldenpfennig.
