Schmallenberg Town Hall
Schmallenberg Town Hall
The best place to start the tour is at the Holz- und Touristikzentrum (where the flyer 'Historischer Stadtrundgang' is also available, parking spaces, WC) or at the parking lot at the Stadthalle.
The historical city tour picks you up in the present and takes you - literally - on a journey into the past on foot: We start with the textile industry, which is still important for Schmallenberg today, and our walk along Weststraße southwards takes us further and further into the past to the founding of the city. The nucleus of the town lies in today's Alter Friedhof spa gardens at the southernmost point of the narrow ridge surrounded by the Lenne. If you would like to take a break, benches and views invite you to linger, as do numerous cafés and restaurants along the walk.
Detailed information on Schmallenberg's town history, anecdotes about sculptures and personalities and great historical photos can be found at: https://www.schmallenberger-sauerland.de/besonderes/historischer-stadtrundgang-schmallenberg-ueberblick/
Guided tours take place regularly or can be booked individually: info@schmallenberg.info
From the starting point, the history column in front of the town hall, the path leads up to Schützenplatz. From there, follow Weststraße in a southerly direction. With a short detour to or into the church, the route leads past Südstraße to the town hall. The path to the right of the town hall leads to the old cemetery and the chapel on the Werth, with a wonderful view of the Kurpark and Grafschaft monastery in the distance. Follow the street 'Auf der Mauer' to the Wasserpforte. Turn left here, up the hill to Oststraße, which you follow northwards. As part of the historical city tour, turn briefly into Wimereuxstraße and Synagogenstraße, then continue along Oststraße. The Jewish cemetery is on your right - follow the signs here. Alternatively, you can also walk directly to the Stadthalle via Schützenplatz.
