The wealth of ore influenced the appearance of the Arnsberg Forest for centuries. Open-cast mining and mining tore large holes in the forest, charcoal burners produced vast quantities of charcoal to meet the energy needs of the ironworks. Towns were founded and the growing population demanded more and more timber and firewood. Relics from this period can still be found in the forests today and bear witness to an almost forgotten industry and its impact on nature.

For centuries, the forest and metal ore mining have had a reciprocal relationship in the Warstein area. Even if it is no longer so easy to recognize today, mining has shaped the landscape around Warstein to a great extent - comparable at most to the influence that limestone mining has on the landscape that is so visible today. The WaldKulTour trail around the Kahlenberg in Warstein is designed to sharpen the eye of the interested hiker: Where can traces of the long-gone mining industry still be found in the landscape today, even in Warstein, and what specific effects did the centuries-long mining industry have on the forest?

The short tour is also suitable for a walk with children. It leads past a forest playground and is in the immediate vicinity of the Bilsteintal Wildlife Park.
