The plan
Even though we are usually rather relaxed hikers, we have decided to cross the Alps this year to challenge ourselves a little. Of course, we want to be well prepared for this. Even if we don't want to miss out on the fun, it will definitely be challenging. To prepare ourselves properly, we have decided on a multi-day hiking tour through the Sauerland. After all, it's a good way to test how fit we really are and the journey from the Ruhrgebiet isn't that long - another plus point.
The planning
So we immediately looked to see which hiking trail would be suitable and found our perfect training route in the Winterberg Hochtour. The multi-day hiking trail is well signposted, runs for 90 kilometers with a total of 2,700 meters in altitude around the Sauerland town and has a huge selection of accommodation options, all of which can be easily booked online. Super practical for our planning and we quickly got everything organized.
The experience
Once we arrive in Winterberg, we park our car and set off straight away towards Kahler Asten, probably the most famous mountain in NRW. This is also the official starting point of the tour. We set off from here, always following the signs that say "WHT". And we soon realize: it's quite strenuous, because there are lots of ups and downs through idyllic valleys, past striking mountain formations or flowering meadows and through dense forests. But that's exactly what we had in mind - after all, we want to get fit. And walking 18 to 20 kilometers a day is not at all easy.
In the evening, we relax in our accommodation, have a bite to eat and relax our tired bones. How good that feels! And, of course, look through the many great photos we took along the way - for example, of the colorful Hochheide or the lush green mixed forests in the distance as we look out over the landscape. Wow, they are beautiful. But we still have two days to go, so I'm excited to see what else we'll experience and discover.
The conclusion
Five unforgettable days of hiking lie behind us. Lots of highlights such as the Astenturm with its phenomenal view, the climb up to the Alte Grimme or the stop at the Hoheleye hut - simply cool. I couldn't have imagined better preparation for our Alpine crossing and we'll definitely be back to the Sauerland more often.
