Neuastenberg /
It is North Rhine-Westphalia's mountain of mountains: the Kahler Asten. Kahle because of the Hochheide, which was created by mountain farmers grazing goats, cows and sheep. We enjoy the herbs, mosses, grasses and lichens. The hike becomes twice as enjoyable when the heather is in bloom and the berries are ripe! Two springs are waiting to be visited: the Lenne and Odeborn springs make wonderful resting places.

Panoramic heights, magnificent panoramic views, gnarled trees, dense forest and lush meadows - a tour that also touches on historically remarkable terrain (the bone of contention of many lords), which runs at an altitude of 700 meters and more throughout and provides a remarkable showcase for young and old alike of the Hochsauerland and one of Winterberg's villages, Neuastenberg, which is so popular in Winterberg.

From the Winter Sports Museum, we walk up Neuastenberg Straße to the tourist information office on the B480. The M X14 hiking trail begins immediately to the right and takes us out of the village to the Rothaarsteig. On the beautiful premium hiking trail, you will always have beautiful views to the left into the Lenne valley. At the source of the Lenne, we reach the summit plateau of the Kahler Asten. Wenden to the right towards the Astenturm. Next to the restaurant is the new natural history exhibition "Kahler Asten, the roof of Westfalen". Here we leave the Rothaarsteig and hike first on X6, then on N. We descend to the road on a beautiful path. After crossing it, turn right. We soon reach the Wetzstein quarry. It is interesting to see how many unusual rock formations nature has created. The path leads in an arc along the southern slope of the Wetzstein. Between the first and second hairpin bend, at the junction of unmarked paths, we turn left to the refuge and path N3. We walk along this path on the eastern side of the Ruhberg to Mollseifen. In the center of the village, we walk with the WHT into the valley of the Odeborn, a small Bergbach and tributary of the Eder. Initially along the road, we soon take a hiking trail on the other side of the valley. Near the Zwistmühle to the road, a few steps to the right and then left onto the N1 to Langewiese. We first walk through an idyllic stream valley. We leave this via a beautiful path, short and steep uphill to the heights. In the village, first turn right, then left to the church. We have arrived back on the Rothaarsteig. At the end of the village, we come to a board where we can find out more about the history of the Grenzweg. The path runs almost dead straight along the ridge. The view of the Lenne valley and the Sauerland mountains is particularly impressive. At the junctionnear Lenneplätze, we turn right onto the N2 and walk back to the main road. From there we return to the parking lot on our outward route.Trail scout: Reiner Penther© Hiking magazine
