Alexander Claiborne, known as Sandy, receives terrible news: his father has been killed in a car accident in Italy one day in May. Together with his wife Diana, Sandy sets off on a journey to Rome to recover his father's remains and sort out the formalities. But this proves to be a difficult task, as the clocks and official machinery in southern Europe tick in a way that the American is not used to. Diana gives up after a week, exasperated. In this chaos, Sandy meets the English actress Alison Ames. An unfortunate coincidence brings the two searchers together, as Alison's mother was driving with Sandy's father when the accident occurred. Their joint search for their deceased parents in a city that beckons with distraction leads Sandy and Alison to be seduced by the flair of the city and the season into spring fever. And this brings them closer not only to each other, but also to the lives of their parents, who have been involved with each other for years. But then Sandy's wife Diana unexpectedly reappears. Is the dolce vita now over for Sandy and Alison?
