The Christuskirche is one of the oldest and most beautiful hall churches in the Sauerland dating from the 13th century. It was built by Count Engelbert von der Mark as Bishop of Liège. The church was dedicated to St. Lambertus, who is said to have been pierced with javelins as Bishop of Maastricht in 708.

This is why it used to be called "Lambertuskirche". The building once had five spires on the west tower, as well as a crossing tower and the two choir towers that are still preserved today. The crossing tower and the corner towers of the west tower were demolished after the town fire of 1725. The late Romanesque style of the church served as a model for other hall churches in the Sauerland. The Protestant Christuskirche as an architectural mix. The Christuskirche in Plettenberg combines two approaches to medieval architecture: it unites Westphalian and Rhenish style elements and is therefore unique in the Märkischer Kreis.

The three naves of the hall church and the single-tower solution with the massive, unstructured tower in the Westfalen are typical of the Westphalian-Sauerland style, while the three-church layout and the two angled choir towers, originally four in the east, are Rhenish. The former Lambertuskirche, which is located on a central square surrounded by half-timbered houses, was built in the second quarter of the 13th century. The west tower was built earlier in the 12th century. The main conch in the east was replaced by a late Gothic choir in the 15th century after it was destroyed - presumably during the Soest feud in 1444. Visitors should definitely take a look at the quatrefoil window above the so-called bridal gate on the south side during an exterior tour. The tympanum, which is also integrated on the south side above another portal and is typical of the local region, depicts icons of the Nativity, Crucifixion and Women at the Tomb, thus pointing to the architectural connection with the school building of the Hohne church in Soest.

a tour of the interior reveals the remarkable frescoes in the choir vault in particular, which show Christ as the world judge Deesis
