The rock massif of the "Hohlen Stein", which was eroded by tributaries of the Lörmecke over millions of years of geological history, rises southwest of the village of Kallenhardt in a particularly attractive landscape. During excavations in the 1930s, finds of human settlement and activities from various periods of development since the last Ice Age were discovered in the two cave areas.

Several traces and artifacts even date back to the migration and settlement phases of the period around 10.Some excavated objects that have not been clearly clarified or remain mysterious to this day and their unusual surroundings have also surrounded this cave with mysterious sagas, myths and legends

, such as the fact that a counterfeiting workshop is said to have operated here during the Thirty Years' War. Popular scientific theories go back even further, according to which the cave is said to have been the historical scene of events that can be found in the dramatic descriptions of the Middle High German Song of the Nibelungs. At the beginning of the 19th century, the large cave room was used as a workshop by a saddler and belt cutter.
