The flue gas chimney on the Bastenberg in Bestwig-Ramsbeck is a relic from the mining era. The environmentally harmful gases produced during the smelting of ore were discharged through this brick chimney up to the Bastenberg. The chimney is not accessible to visitors. However, there is a rest area with seating and a good view over the Valmetal valley at the foot of the chimney.

The chimney is approx. 20 m high.
A star shines on its top during Advent, a cross during Easter and a flag flies on the chimney the rest of the year.
Every year on Ascension Day (Father's Day), the chimney festival takes place at the chimney
. The R2 circular hiking trail (from Ramsbeck), the Bestwig Panorama Trail and the Ramsbeck Mining Trail lead directly past the chimney. A hiking tip is the 12 km long Ramsbeck mining circuit.
The environmentally harmful gases produced during the smelting of ore were discharged through this brick chimney up to the Bastenberg. The sulphur dioxide contained in the exhaust gases combined with the moisture in the air to form sulphuric acid, a substance that is harmful to the environment. To prevent this, this chimney was built with two flues over 20 meters to condense as much sulphur dioxide and humidity as possible on the cold walls.
A webcam provides up-to-date images from the top of the chimney:
