Cultural history in the borderland between Waldeck and WestphaliaBrowsethrough the AdorferGrenzGeschichten in the GeoFoyer. Adorf or "Athathorpe", the "village on the water", was first mentioned in a document in 1120. Its fortification with a castle, three town gates and a fortified church was necessary, as the village was located on the border between Waldeck and Westfalen - not only politically, but also economically. The reason for this was the iron ore that was mined on both sides of the border and over which there were frequent disputes.
