The origins of the Stiftskirche date back to Charlemagne. He had a Christian church built here in place of the pagan sanctuary of the Saxons, the Irminsul. Badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt and given a magnificent baroque interior from the workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen.
