As early as the Middle Ages, pilgrims from the north and east of Europe made their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. From Paderborn, the route follows the former Roman road through the Sauerland to Elspe via Husen, Meerhof, Marsberg, Padberg, Gudenhagen and Olsberg. There the pilgrims meet the old "Heidenstraße". The entire route is marked with the pilgrim's shell and offers many historical sights along the way.

The pilgrimage from Paderborn to Santiago de Compostela in distant Spain is almost 2,600 km long.
