The parish church of St. John the Baptist is also known as Sauerland Cathedral. A first predecessor building was erected in the 9th century, which was extended by a second building in the 11th century and rebuilt around 1230 as a 3rd building in the style of a three-church complex.
The present Gothic hall church was built in the 2nd half of the 14th century. The tower dates from around 1230, was raised in the 14th century and has been crowned by a Baroque onion since the Baroque period. It is considered the town's landmark. The church has been the center of worship for more than 1000 years.
It has always been lavishly furnished; numerous pious donations testify to the centuries-old attachment of Attendorn's Christians to their parish church. 1996 to 2001, the church was extensively restored inside and out. In this context, the choir was also redesigned.
