Dümpel farms in Nachrodt
The two listed farm ensembles are idyllically situated above the Lenne valley on the sunny side with a view of the village of Nachrodt. The farms belonged to the 37 estates of the so-called "Kelleramt", which were responsible for supplying Burg Altena. They were first mentioned in a document in 1748 and the two barns, the oldest buildings, were built in 1770 and 1773 respectively.
The individual courtyards each consist of a small half-timbered cottage, an open coach house and a gabled barn in half-timbering or whitewashed quarry stone with a large gabled entrance. The beehive has also been preserved in the upper courtyard, where a beekeeper still keeps his colonies today. The neighboring meadow orchard has been supplemented with extensive new plantings of typical local fruit trees and separated from the extensive pastures.
A curious fact is that the two farm ensembles used to be separated by the county border of the Iserlohn and Altena districts. Even today, the upper farm is still located in Iserlohn, while the lower one belongs to the municipality of Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde. This is even still recognizable by the wall made of layered fieldstones, which is always carefully straightened.
In earlier times, a farm like this, with its adjoining agricultural land, provided for an entire family. The arable land yielded crops and cattle were kept in the paddocks. In 1912, the von Löbbecke family from Haus Nachrodt bought both farms and farmed them themselves for a time after the Second World War. Currently, the land is completely leased out and used as pasture for young horses and suckler cows. The houses are inhabited and the barns are home to horses and chickens.
Klara's cottage
Halfway to the Dümpel farms, on the "Dümplerleie" below the Lenne rock "Klara's Höhe", there is an old half-timbered forester's cottage with a quarry stone base. The restored house in a romantic location is rented out as a vacation home under the name "Klara's Häuschen".
Several hiking trails lead past Dümpel into the forests of the Lennetal, including the circular hiking trail over Klara's Höhe with views of the Dümpel farms and into the beautiful natural surroundings of the Lennetal, which used to be known as "Westfalen Switzerland" due to its beauty.
