The Hönne gives its name to the Hönnetal, one of the most romantic valleys in Germany. The Hönne has its source at an altitude of 437 m at the Großer Attig in Neuenrade. It then flows through Neuenrade, Balve and then on to Menden. In Fröndenberg it flows into the Ruhr at an altitude of 127 m and on this route the Hönne has covered 33 km.
It has special features in times of low rainfall: The spring is a so-called starvation spring. This means that the spring dries up when the groundwater level falls. In addition, the water of the Hönne disappears underground at certain points and flows through limestone caves under the river bed. This river has long been inhabited along its banks. Corresponding finds suggest that the Hönne was already bustling with activity in the Palaeolithic Age. In the Hönnetal, you are in a place with a long and exciting history.
