Quitmannsturm hiking parking lot on the Kohlberg
Quitmannsturm hiking parking lot on the Kohlberg
The walk through Neuenrade's city forest on the Kohlberg has a lot to offer, such as the avenue of trees of the year, the SGV memorial, the baby forest with pacifier tree, the Landwehr, the forest cemetery, the ski meadow, the Quitmannsturm (observation tower on the highest mountain in Neuenrade). Apart from the short section from the Quitmannsturm to the hiking parking lot, the trail is quite flat and is therefore also suitable for nature lovers who often find inclines difficult.
From the Quitmannsturm hiking parking lot, we first take the main hiking trail. On the right-hand side, the town of Neuenrade has laid out the avenue of trees of the year. After about 200 m, we reach the memorial of the Sauerland Mountain Association, an impressive memorial. It was erected in 1938 to commemorate the First World War. Today we see it as a memorial for peace.About 200 m further on, a bench at the edge of the path invites us to linger. On the right, we can see a small rampart planted with trees and shrubs. This is a so-called Landwehr. It served as an outer fortification for the town of Neuenrade in the Middle Ages.We pass the baby forest. Neuenrade parents, grandparents and godparents can plant a tree for their newborns here in keeping with a long tradition. We can use the shelter opposite the baby forest for a short rest.At the crossroads, we turn sharp right and walk uphill along the Iserlohn Postweg to the forest cemetery. We continue walking towards Kohlberg and come to the ski meadow. From here you have a wide view over the Neuenrade districts, even as far as "Wildewiese" with the Schomberg tower. From the ski slope, it is only about 500 m to the imposing Quitmannsturm on the Kohlberg (514 m). In 1893, the Quitmannsturm was donated by the four sons of Neuenrade teacher Carl Friedrich Quitmann. In 1986, the Quitmannsturm was renovated by the town of Neuenrade. It has a height of 14 meters. Those who dare to make the climb will be rewarded with a wonderful view. Now we walk a few meters downhill until we arrive back at the hiking parking lot.
