The prehistory and early history of the region ranges from the coral reefs that developed in today's urban area during the Devonian period to fossils of ancient sea creatures and the tools of the first humans who lived in Iserlohn 70,000 years ago.
The town was founded in the Middle Ages and the production of wire and chain mail began when the town was granted its charter. The wire, needle and brass industry that developed from this shaped Iserlohn and the lives of its inhabitants - both in the factory and at home.
Socializing was not neglected in the up-and-coming town: in the 19th century, numerous clubs were founded in the town and new political ideas were discussed in the pubs.
In 1849, Prussian troops put down an uprising by the citizens of Iserlohn, which had begun with the storming of the arsenal - today's town museum.
The National Socialist terror and the Second World War also left their mark on the town.
The nearby Altstadt air raid shelter, built in 1943, is maintained by the museum and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
