You can reach the Große Grube via the mountain station of the Ettelsberg cable car (400 m) or via the mountain station of the funicular at the Mühlenkopfschanze (1.8 km).

In the 16th and 17th centuries, charcoal was produced here for the iron smelting industry in the region. There was a pit pile at the large pit, which gave the square its name. Today, seating areas and a shelter invite you to rest and linger.
