In contrast to the multiplexes, our cinema has a long history, which is briefly described below.
The cinema was founded by the Dettenberg family in 1916.
During the war, the front part of the building was used as a bank and the rear part as a grain store, so that the Altenhundem cinema was reopened in 1928 under the new owner, Mr. Thurian.
In 1938, a new façade, today's pillared porch, was built with a new foyer and a new projection room, which was moved to the rear a little later due to increased visitor capacity. The available seats increased from 224 to 400.
At the same time, Mr. Thurian was running another cinema in a town three kilometers away. However, as he only had one copy of each film available for both cinemas, it was common practice at the time to move the film from one cinema to the other. As a result, there were often screenings that did not finish until after midnight.
In 1955, Mr. Schoen took over the Altenhundem cinema. At the same time as the new owner, newer technology was also introduced into the cinema to keep up with television.
Jutta and Meinolf Hanses have been running the cinema since 1985.
After long, intensive planning, they began a massive renovation of the cinema in the winter of 1986 to increase comfort for the guests of the Altenhundem cinema. The old ticket booth for selling tickets, drinks and confectionery was replaced with a bar that was more inviting for socializing.
CAMERA and CLASSIC were the names of the two auditoriums that were created from one large hall and equipped with the latest technology (conversion
from the old carbon light projectors to new machines) and new seating
.
After these major renovations, the cinema reopened its doors on March 6, 1987.
In the fall of 1988, an outbuilding was converted into the third CONTRAST cinema in order to meet the typical multi-cinema house of the 1980s and offer a larger selection of films. Our visitors were the first in the entire Sauerland and Siegerland region to enjoy fresh popcorn with their movie.
The next step into the future followed in 1994 with fundamental changes to all three cinemas. Firstly, the auditoriums were extended and modern attributes such as amphitheater-like ramps and greater row spacing were added. In addition, the old screens were replaced with larger ones and state-of-the-art sound technology and a sophisticated air conditioning system were installed.
In 1995, a computerized box office system further improved the service for our visitors.
In 1998, the entire sanitary facilities were expanded and brought up to date.
In 2003, all the auditoriums were renovated and fitted with new carpets and new seating. In addition, cup holders were installed to increase comfort while watching films.
In 2004, the Hanses family carried out a further modernization of the building: the cinema was given a new look while retaining the classic profile of the façade. In the now extended foyer, many comfortable seating options invite guests to linger in a pleasant atmosphere before and after their visit to the cinema. Our extended food range offers you a fully rounded cinema experience at reasonable prices.
