Natural treasures Lörmecketal
Parkplatz Hohler Stein
59602 Rüthen
The Lörmecketal owes its present-day character to the special geological conditions and historical forms of use. The extensive limestone deposits were hollowed out by the lime-dissolving water of the stream until the fissure and cave system collapsed over a long distance. The collapse valley in the area of the "Hoher Stein" is particularly impressive. The "Hohler Stein" cultural cave also bears witness to the power of the Lörmecke water.
The lower Lörmecke is a valley with two faces. On the western side of the valley, old, stately deciduous forests grow, consisting mainly of beech trees. In contrast, the wooded areas on the eastern side of the valley are younger: less than 100 years ago, the slopes were free of woodland and the goats from the nearby village of Kallenhardt grazed here. A particularly beautiful section of this historically evolved cultural landscape has been preserved at the "Hoher Stein". The Buchenwalds are at their most beautiful in spring when the hollow larkspur, yellow anemone and other spring flowers are in bloom. In spring and summer, the grazed slopes on the Hoher Stein glow in the colors of countless flowers of the drift plants. Several orchid species can also be found here.
