In contrast to many other old towns, Soest's townscape is still characterized by mighty historic fortifications. The ramparts and other facilities for defending the town were of great importance for the political standing of the town and for the everyday life of the population. In earlier times, there were ten town gates in Soest. The Osthofentor is the only one still standing. It was built between 1523 and 1526 by the Hessian master craftsman Porphyrius and his journeymen in a particularly elaborate design.

Today, the Osthofentor houses the remains of the town's armory, in particular the impressive ammunition stock of around 25,000 crossbow bolts from the 14th to 16th centuries. The organization of the town's defences in the Middle Ages is illustrated on display boards. The topographical development of the town of Soest from around 1000 to 1900 is illustrated using further information boards and two models of the town, which are set up in the former recreation room of the gate guard, and a systematic overview of the most important stages in the town's history is provided.

Note: Unfortunately, the Osthofentor Museum is not suitable for people with walking difficulties due to the narrow spiral staircases.
