Since 1996, the town archive has been located in the listed building of the so-called Präparandie (1894) of the former Prussian teacher training college. The Rüthen town archive is a municipal institution. In this function, it takes over documents worthy of archiving (including documents, files, maps, plans, photos), which were created in the course of administrative activities, for the purpose of their permanent storage and safeguarding their preservation. This archive material is arranged, recorded and indexed in order to make it usable for official, scientific, journalistic and private purposes.

The town archive also collects documents of non-town origin (e.g. from associations, organizations, companies, farms, private individuals), provided that these materials are of historical importance and have a connection to Rüthen and its localities. They are intended to supplement the official records in order to document as diverse a picture of the past as possible, and in any case the archive offers free and non-binding advice on questions relating to the preservation of these documents.

The town archive is responsible for publications and papers on the history of the town of Rüthen and its villages. In addition to its traditional task as the 'memory' of the administration, the town archive sees itself in particular as a municipal service center for both local citizens interested in history and visitors and users from outside - namely as a place for historical information and encounters and for contemporary historical work for the Rüthen area and its surroundings.

Further explanation of the term "Präparandie":

A Präparandenanstalt (or Präparandenschule), sometimes also referred to as Präparandie, was the lower level of elementary school teacher training from the 18th to the early 20th century. It prepared pupils for attending teacher training colleges, hence the name Präparand (Latin for one who prepares). Training began immediately after the end of primary or secondary school.
