In 2009 and 2010, the so-called "Schmarotzerhaus" was lovingly restored by the Menden Foundation for Monuments and Culture and handed over to the town's Museum of Town and Cultural History. Museum for Urban and Cultural History. A small, very fine branch of the museum has been set up here since 2010.

The Schmarotzerhaus uses the former medieval town wall as its rear wall. This forms one of the four walls of the house. As one wall was saved by leaning against the town wall, it is referred to as a "Schmarotzerhaus".

The 300-year-old half-timbered house is furnished with a shoemaker's workshop, furniture and household appliances from the period between 1860 and 1930. As a typical poor man's house, it tells the story of the hard life of a day laborer in Menden with his large family. Only a small detached section of the medieval town wall in Menden remains next to the Schmarotzerhaus.
