Wilzenberg (658 m high) with Wilzenberg tower, place of pilgrimage between Grafschaft and Winkhausen, pagan place of worship with visible ramparts View over the Schmallenberg Sauerland region
At 658 m high, the Wilzenberg is one of the most striking mountains in the Sauerland and is not only a place of pilgrimage between Grafschaft and Winkhausen but also a pagan place of worship with visible ramparts. The Wilzenberg tower offers visitors a fantastic view over the Schmallenberg Sauerland.
A rampart castle and a refuge are said to have stood on this legendary mountain in the early Middle Ages. The rampart ring that can still be seen today near the viewing tower and the weapons found in 1950 (iron swords and spearheads) support this assumption.
Wilzenberg is one of the 43 Sauerland-Seelenorte in the Sauerland-Wanderdorf. The history of the Sauerland-Seelenorte by Michael Gleich and other useful information can be found at www.sauerland-seelenorte.de.
