Older than the people of Lippstadt themselves
The place currently known as Zurhelle-Platz already existed before the town of Lippstadt was officially founded in 1185. The remains of the former settlement fortifications can still be seen today on the buildings to the east in the historic town center. These architectural elements bear witness to the early development and defensive structure of the settlement.

The Zurhelle family - influential and formative
At the time, Zurhelle-Platz was significantly shaped by the imposing building of the former Reichsbank branch on the western side. The square was named in honour of the Zurhelle family, who played an important role in Lippstadt and exerted considerable influence.

A square with a long history
In 1185, before the town was officially founded, today's Zurhelle-Platz was still located outside the suburban settlement. Before the imposing half-timbered house on the opposite side of the street served as the headquarters of the Reichsbank, it was the home of the Zurhelle family from the 17th to the 20th century.

For around 300 years, members of the Zurhelle family held various influential positions. They were active as merchants and bankers, political functionaries and heads of merchant guilds. They also served as mayors and were awarded the honorary title of Kommerzienrat.
