The starting point of the winter hike is the hiking parking lot in Altenilpe. From here, follow the black-marked Sauerland-Höhenflug access trail (parallel to hiking trails S6, S8) which takes you through meadows and forests up to the small Hengsiepen farmstead. Here the hiking trail meets the Sauerland-Höhenflug, which you now follow to the right in the direction of Forsthaus/ Bad Fredeburg. The Sauerland-Höhenflug first runs through snow-covered forests for a short distance, but then emerges from the forest and now follows a wonderful panoramic trail. Along meadows and small Christmas tree plantations, the Sauerland-Höhenflug leads over the mountain ridge above Altenilpe and lets your gaze wander far over the Sauerland. If it's not too cold, you can take a break at a small rest area with a table and bench and enjoy the panorama. The Höhenflug now circles the Gelsterhagen mountain through forests before another magnificent view opens up far beyond the Ilpequelle spring. Here, a large panorama board explains the important landmarks to be seen. At the next refuge, where the Sauerland-Höhenflug continues through spruce forests to the old forester's lodge, leave the Höhenflug and follow the road downhill a little. Here, too, you can enjoy beautiful views. The Al5 hiking trail marked here automatically joins the Al4. Turn right at the junction and continue along the Al4. This hiking trail runs above, first along meadows, then through forests parallel to the K20 road back towards Altenilpe. Above Altenilpe, you will once again come across a black-marked Sauerland-Höhenflug access path, which will take you back to the parking lot. You can stop for refreshments at the inn in Altenilpe. The hiking trail is not pushed. However, with its wide paths and wonderful panoramic views, it is ideal as a winter hiking trail in light to moderate snow conditions.
It is particularly important to take a cell phone with you on winter hikes. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing should be a matter of course.
