Sauerland actually means "Süderlande" and refers to the land south of the Hellweg, an important east-west trade route that ran through the middle of what is now the Ruhrgebiet. No wonder that the iron ore deposits and smelting in the Märkisches Sauerland were of enormous importance for pre-industrial development. The "Schleiper Hamme", which stands at the beginning of the informative themed trail about iron smelting and hammer mills, bears witness to this.
The Schleiper Hamm, an old hammer mill in the Schleipe valley from the early 19th century (first evidence), is home to an industrial museum. Forging demonstrations and "mill days" are interesting for young and old.
On the theme trail itself, display boards provide information about industrial culture in the Oben an der Volme region. If you like, stop by Schriever's farm store with agricultural products. The former Neuhohlinden substation along the way, the smallest technical monument in the Märkischer Kreis, is worth seeing because of its expressionist architectural style.
Special features along the way: in addition to the information boards with exciting information and some QR codes for further videos or audio tracks, you can also discover an adventure treasure chest along the way.
A steep ascent at the beginning of the hike to the heights of Kierspe, before the hiking route then leads along forest paths through the Schleipe valley, ultimately also along the young Schleipe, before a small road leads back towards the starting point.Road & asphalt: 2.6 km - Gravel path: 4.7 km - Nature trail: 0.7 kmWe start at the small parking lot behind the Schleiper Hamm and follow the asphalt path along the young Schleipe at the beginning. Following the small road, we cross a small settlement and soon reach the nature reserve there. Now the asphalt road ends and the forest path leads us further and further up the mountain along the Schleipe. Finally, at the junction of the "Schleipetalweg" and the "Babergweg", we turn right and now, after a few more meters of ascent, we have a great view ahead of us on our forest path. After a while, we come to a crossroads where we continue straight ahead, now back on a section of asphalt road. An information board with a bench invites you to take a break here before we slowly return to the starting point via forest paths and partly through forests.Great views in the direction of Kierspe accompany the path before it leads us back to the starting point after crossing the "Vorderster Berg" settlement, downhill to the right in the direction of Schleiper Hamm.
Hiking-friendly and weatherproof footwear is recommended.
First aid: In an emergency, dial the emergency number 112 and state the rescue point number. Rescue points are access points marked in the forest for rescue vehicles. If the nearest rescue point is not known, your location can be called up directly via AML (Advanced Mobile Location) during the emergency call.
