If you walk through Brilon's Altstadt, you walk through many centuries. Encounter silent contemporary witnesses who, if they could tell their stories, would fill moving novels. First mentioned in 973, Brilon developed into one of the most important Hanseatic towns in Westfalen and one of the largest towns in Germany in terms of area.
The Altstadt of the historic Hanseatic town is well worth seeing and invites you to take a relaxed stroll. The course of the old Brilon city wall can still be easily recognized on the basis of the city map, aerial photographs and, not least, the street names. As almost all of the sights are located within the old city wall, they are within easy reach for visitors.
Here you can experience a modern, active town in its historical guise and a harmonious blend of yesterday and today.
Whether sporty or relaxed, cyclists and hikers of all kinds will find the right route in Brilon. You can cycle along the MöhnetalRadweg or Alme-Radweg in a relaxed manner and enjoy the view of the water. Themed cycle paths such as the Ruhr-Eder GeoRadroute tell exciting stories. In addition, crisp trails await mountain bikers in the middle of the Bike Arena Sauerland. Three flowing routes ranging from seven to 17 kilometers guarantee riding fun in the TrailGround on Brilon's Hängeberg.
On top hiking trails such as the Rothaarsteig or the Brilon Kammweg, but also on many smaller circular hiking trails, a new adventure awaits around every corner. Almequellen, Borberg, the Kalkkuppen of Brilon North: the landscape changes its face again and again. Extensive forests, gentle valleys, clear waters. Themed trails lead across national borders, to places steeped in history, along geological features or mining relics.
