The tanners of Burgstraße - at the pulse of leather production in Lippstadt
Burgstraße is located directly on the River Lippe. Tanners were based here in the 19th century. Over time, the street went by various names such as Müllenweg, Wallenstraße and Wall. Part of it was known as Schabekuhle, named after the tanners who lived there.

Everyday life in the tanners' workshop
The buildings on Burgstraße were located directly on the Lippe. This was ideal for the tanners. The tanners were moved here because of the strong smell. They could easily wash the hides in the Lippe after tanning.

The end of a tradition
The life of a tanner was hard and dangerous. Working with corrosive chemicals and the smell of leather characterized everyday life. With industrialization and the development of new materials, traditional tanning became less important. The saying: "One's hides are swimming away" comes from the tannery. The tanners of Lippstadt tied their skins together with chains so that they did not float away and their work was not in vain.

Take a stroll through Burgstraße and be enchanted by the history of the tanners.
