The lower canal weir: Invisible hero in flood protection in Lippstadt

Protective shield against flooding of the Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Lippe, a lifeline for Lippstadt, can also become a danger when it floods. The lower canal weir was built in 1985 and has been an indispensable part of flood protection ever since. During heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the weir regulates the flow of water and thus prevents flooding in the city.

Guardianof the groundwater level in the city
In addition to flood protection, the canal weir fulfils another important function in the city centre: it stabilizes the groundwater level. A constant groundwater level is particularly important for the historic buildings in Lippstadt's Altstadt, many of which were built on wooden piles. Even small fluctuations can endanger the building fabric.

Technical masterpiece in Lippstadt
The lower canal weir is an impressive feat of engineering. At high water, special fish-belly flaps are opened, which can cope with an enormous volume of water. Up to 1,200 full bathtubs per second then flow over the weir - an impressive feat that ensures the protection of the city.
