Founding and religious life
In the early years of the 14th century, pious women in Lippstadt came together to lead a life of obedience and contemplation of God. They chose St. Anne, the patron saint of mothers and widows, as their princess of heaven. In her honor, they built a small monastery on what is now Soeststraße. The community lived according to simple rules, even without vows, and devoted themselves to prayer and the care of their souls.
Everyday life and work of the nuns
In addition to their religious life, the nuns also contributed to the economic independence of the convent. They produced high-quality fabrics and cared for the poor and sick in the surrounding area. Despite the recognition of their work, they encountered resistance from the guilds, who feared their competition. In order to be able to sell their products, the nuns were forced to offer their fabrics in large bales.
The end of an era: dissolution and subsequent use
The Reformation brought profound changes to the monastery. As the only Catholic place of worship in Lippstadt, it had a special significance for the faithful after the Reformation. Nevertheless, it was unable to escape the political and social changes. In the 19th century, the monastery was dissolved and demolished. The Nicolai School was built in its place, which later had to make way for residential buildings.
