Most of the route follows the Bestwig Panorama Trail.
Nuttlar - cycle path to Dümel - Dümel level crossing - small level crossing - Ruhr bridge - old sports field - wet timber camp - Christmas tree growing areas - Kreuzfelsen - Steinbergruine - return route - detour to the Mariengrotte
From the center of Nuttlar, follow the cycle and footpath along the railroad towards the "Dümel" settlement. At the "Am Dümel" level crossing, we meet the Bestwig Panoramaweg marked (B). Following this, we cross the tracks and the B7 and follow the footpath on the other side of the road slightly downhill. Once again, we cross a railroad line at a crosswalk. After that, we cross the Ruhr and continue across the old soccer pitch. The path runs uphill through a small wooded area past the wet timber camp. (Early 2021: watch out for forestry work). Then continue right along the farm track towards Ostwig. The path later leads left uphill through Christmas tree plantations and then right again on a forest path towards Ostwig. At the next crossroads, the Bestwig Panorama Trail turns sharply left and is now accompanied by the O6. Leave the O6 at the next junction and turn right onto the O1. After a few meters, we pass an information board about the Steinbergruine ruins. Continue right here, following a small path through the forest to the cross on the Kreuzberg. Continue along the path until you reach your destination - the Steinbergruine ruins. You can climb the ruins and enjoy the view over the Ruhrtal. A seating area in front of the Steinbergruine invites you to take a break. Then return the same way. From the level crossing at Dümel, however, do not follow the cycle path into the village, but the (B) Bestwig Panorama Trail up to the Dümelskopf. The Mariengrotte grotto is somewhat hidden here and invites you to say a short prayer. Continue along the (B) and then turn left down Königsstraße back to the starting point.
Hiking boots with good tread, weatherproof clothing, possibly provisions for a break.
We did the hike in winter, but the paths are not cleared. Be careful in ice and snow, it could be slippery.
There are tables and benches at the Steinbergruine ruins for a cozy picnic halfway through the hike.
