Parking lot at the end of Ostwig (towards Gevelinghausen)
Parking lot at the end of Ostwig (towards Gevelinghausen)
The trail starts at the hiking parking lot at the Ostwig through road (in the direction of Gevelinghausen). There is also a hiking board there, on which the trail is marked "06".
First cross the road and follow the signpost uphill to the Steinbergruine. This first section is a challenging mountain path that winds its way up the Steinberg. Once at the top, there is a beautiful panoramic view over the Ruhrtal. A seating area invites you to take a break and it is worth climbing up to the Steinbergruine. Continue along a path to the cross on the Steinberg. We then follow the Steinbergruine circular route signpost on forest and woodland paths towards Gevelinghausen. There we meet the Sauerland-Waldroute and the Olsberg Kneippwanderweg trail again, but turn right and walk along a narrow path through a spruce forest towards Ostwig. Shortly before the end, we pass the Antonius tunnel. There is an information board here with interesting facts about Ostwig's mining history. After a few minutes, we pass the open refuge on the Steinberg and then return to the starting point of the hike.
Our tip by bus & train:
The train station in 59909 Bestwig can be used as the starting point. You can travel here comfortably by bus or train or park your car. From the station, the southern route of the Sauerland-Waldroute (white "W" on a green background) leads towards Gevlinghausen. It is approx. 2 km along the Sauerland-Waldroute to the hiking parking lot in Ostwig, the official starting point of the tour.
Steinbergruine (flue gas chimney from 1854), panoramic views, Alexanderstollen, refuge on the Steinberg. At the start and finish point, there is a water treading area in the "Elpe", which provides a welcome cool-down after the hike.
The trail is marked throughout with the sign "Rundweg Steinbergruine, Sauerland-Waldroute (green "W" on a white background)". The circular route O6 is partly identical.
